Project by Colin Pi, Carrie Hanson, and Kevin Grow
Our project examines nine buildings at Carleton – existing and not – and the way they contributed to Carleton’s goals to become an elite school. The various aspects we look at are the improvement of academics, the establishment of a sports program, and the expansion of residential life. Goodsell, Laird Hall, Seccombe house, Williams Hall and the old observatory all show the academic aspect; this is particularly important to our idea of the school wanting to create an elite presence. Laird Grandstand and Sayles Hill Gymnasium represent the growing athletics at Carleton. Finally, Burton and Gridley establish Carleton as a residential college.
Our progress: we have all mostly created our 3D models of buildings, and have filled out a spreadsheet with information about the buildings. Before class tomorrow we will add more information about the extra images of interiors and floor plans. After getting set up on arcGIS tomorrow, we will finish adding the information over the weekend.
We will create 3D models of the buildings that no longer exist, and use the already created models of the buildings that still exist on campus. We will then insert all of these models into a map using arcGIS. We are going to use currently existing models of the buildings that still exist and have created SketchUp 3D models of the non existing buildings to be incorporated into arcGIS. We hope to use a feature on the map that will act as a timeline, so we can see how the school and buildings have changed during the first 50 years. An additional feature that we will be adding is extra images and information about each building that can be examined when looking at each specific building. This will be done to give our audience a better awareness of how the buildings are used and how they contributed to Carleton’s expansion and establishment as elite college. When each of the buildings are selected, this information will show up in a new page.
Problems: One of the issues we’ve run into is simple lack of materials. We decided to expand on some of the information we’re including so as to show more pictures of activities that go on at each building, but some of the buildings (like Seccombe House) don’t have very much material about them. The best solution for that is just to continue research. Another problem is our lack of familiarity with the arcGIS software that we will be using to incorporate everything, and we will work on that after class tomorrow.
Project timeline:
End of 8th week: Create the arcGIS map and incorporate our images and information
9th week: Due, edit
10th week: Present.
