Building an Elite College

Our project examines nine buildings at Carleton – existing and not – and the way they contributed to Carleton’s goals to becoming an elite school. The various aspects we look at are the improvement of academics, the establishment of a sports program, and the expansion of residential life. We created 3D models of the demolished buildings, and used already created models of the buildings that still exist on campus. We then inserted images of these models into a map using arcGIS Web Mapping Application. The models are also in a 3D representation on arcScene desktop viewer, so that the time lapse can be seen. Furthermore, we wanted to give a feel for each of the buildings’ uses, and have images of the interior and activities from all of the buildings in our ArcGIS story map.

  1. Your team overcame several technical challenges to produce an impressive final interactive map and website for your final project. The story map works well, I think. The annotated images give a very good sense of the exterior and interior of some of Carleton’s earliest bulidings, while the linked map keeps their locations in realtion to each other constantly in mind. You find some very interessting stories too: I had no idea that Charlotte Williard ran the time services at Goodsell, or that Sayles-Hill had a pool! The companion website is helpful in giving an overview of the project, methods and sources. My major critique is that, while you say repeatedly that these bulidings helped Carleton become an elite school, you don’t provide much direct evidence to support your statement that that was the explicit goal of these projects. Another paragraph introducing and supporting that thesis at the top of the website and/or story map would really nail it home. That said, this was still a very interesting and well constructed project — good work!
